A Room for Looking

This installation was designed for the Ballarat Foto Biennale to house and display the work of internationally acclaimed photographer Campbell Addy. It was located within the Ballarat Mining Exchange, a historic civic interior that brought its own scale, structure and atmosphere to the exhibition. The project created a temporary setting for the photographic work inside this existing heritage space. A simple system of walls, thresholds and display surfaces organised the sequence of viewing, allowing the images to sit within the larger room without being overwhelmed by it. The design worked with circulation, sightlines, light and moments of pause. It needed to support the work, manage the scale of the Mining Exchange, and give the exhibition a clear spatial order. With a limited amount of material, the installation created a room within a room: temporary, direct and specific to the building.
